Baghdad on Wednesday: 1.75” of rain the past
couple of days may not sound like a lot, but it felt like a lot, coming as it did in short, intense outbursts; seems every time it rains it rains hard, now: everybody’s backyard flooded. but today’s paper contains the phrase “climate change”! yes — letter writer sez she’s still hoping for “an in-depth news story” about . . . storm- water. yes, b/c of “over- development of impervious surfaces” — she encourages residents “to fully understand our stormwater needs before the next ‘surprise’ flood wreaks havoc on our community due to ongoing climate change.” good for her! at least they’re raising our stormwater rates . . . too late for china: wall of water surging down the yangtze, into xi’an, w/no sewers big enough to handle the currents rushing through the streets meanwhile: 5 u.s. towns hit record highs in june-july: albany, n.y. burlington, vt. hartford, ct. concord, n.h. caribou, me. caribou, for crissakes! not that phoenix was spared: july temps avg'd 98.6 f, wch is fine inside the body but not so much, outside, but in any case is a record; + 15 nighttime lows > 90 f but the mideast feels worse: temps topping 120 every day this week in iraq; highest temp on record for lebanon: 144 f — & damascus tied its all-time hi of 115; algeria the latest country to burn: 15 k acres ablaze meanwhile, surprise lilies (the leafless pink lilies formerly known as “naked ladies”) are blooming here — seems like they usually come out in mid-august, when it’s dry dry dry . . . so what a pleasant surprise
